It was really great being in Wheaton this past week. Not because we were in Wheaton, but because Wheaton is near Chicago. And Chicago is home to a lot, most importantly Sarah, Rolf, and Isaak. What a treat to be able to spend time with them! Thank you MCT for scheduling me here.
On Friday, we all went down to U.S. Cellular Field (lousy name) to see the White Sox take on my hometown team, the Mariners! Matt Johnson and Rolf's brother Anders came along too and we all had a grand ol' time watching the home team beat the hometown team. Oh well, they did come back and take the next two games. Too bad the Angels keep winning as well. And despite all the cheering and home run fireworks, Isaak was unfazed and kept his cool through all nine innings. What a kid. He definitely got mellow from both sides of the family.
The following day the Hammersborgs came to see the show and celebrated with Mallory and I on a job well done with some ice cream afterwards. And now Mallory and I are in Jamestown, ND for the night on our way back to Missoula for break. We had the pleasure of having a free, homegrilled lunch at Mallory's friend Mike's house outside of St. Paul. Nothing like burgers and potato salad at home to ease the pain of long travel days. We avoid fastfood burgers like the plague if possible, but having the same food homemade is like eating something completely different. I have to say that I'm very glad to be heading west. Here in North Dakota it's comforting to be in the spaciousness that the landscape provides. It's just more crowded east of the Mississippi, even in the rural areas. I appreciate the size and scope that the Plains and the western States provide. Big mountains, endless wheat fields, infinite forests--land that speaks volumes. It will be good to get back to Washington and to see Mt. Rainier standing tall above the evergreen forests, if only for a couple of weeks.
